So what is it?

Thermoshield looks like a normal roof paint. But to the trained eye, some critical differences can easily be observed.

Firstly, being a functional coating, we strongly advise to use the product in white. The reason for this is that white is the most effective colour to reflect infra red light. We have however manufactured special IR reflective colours since 2008. But experience has shown that the best performance by far is achieved leaving the product unchanged.

Another difference is its texture. A white paint can only go so far to reflect heat causing light. A fact that is even more apparent when the coating gets dirty and loses its reflectivity. This is where Thermoshield really gets into its own. It consists of millions of micro ceramic beads. As the product dries, the beads form an insulation layer. Like all insulators, the thickness determines the degree at which it can prevent heat passing thru.

This brings us to the next difference between Thermoshield and roof paint. Roof paints are generally applied at a 50 micro film thickness after two coats. That roughly translates to about nine square metres per litre of paint. With Thermoshield we need a film thickness of 500 microns to achieve the optimal performance against the always important cost factor. To achieve this thickness, 2 to 4 coats would be required depending on application and technique. Translated in laymans terms, Thermoshield uses 2 square meters per litre to function as specified.

Other differences are of a chemical composition in nature and are less likely to be observed unless a side by side comparison is kept over a prolonged period. On of which is that Thermoshield has a build-in rust inhibitor. So if youre galvanized or zinc roof are weathered but not yet rusting, the product can be applied directly without the use of a primer.
